My final

After a few finishing touches i had finally come to my final design for the poster. The changes i had done was to change the font of the colour CUT to white. I then added in black " your way". I added this because i felt that the poster still needed more writing, it felt a bit too plain to the left side. I very much like the contrast between the colour ( black and white) font because it makes the poster complete. The other changes i had done was to take out the brand symbol that was on the scissors. It was important for me to do this because it was a distraction to the poster. I had changed the phrase  "Celebration of Everyday Objects" into a white colour font. This was necessary because it helps stand out, especially when it is next to the thick black handle of the scissors.
In conclusion i very much enjoyed working on this project.

Experimenting my final.

The aim through all of these photos was to try to capture the right font. I had looked at different types of font for the word CUT and tried to see which one suits best. As you can see, i have decided to place the scissors facing upwards mainly because i like the composition of it

Trying out different ideas.

From the previous photos i had taken, i worked with each one of them and touched them up. Here are the
few that i liked out of the many i had done.

Add caption

Out of all of these images, i felt that this image here to the left had a lot of potential in it. I had decided this would be my final, but there was still something missing to it. So what i did was with this photos was experiment with it and try out different ideas.

Rough draft of my Final

This is the rought draft of my final idea. The font used for the title i believe will be my final one. The reason why i like this font is because it looks like something one can simply cut out with scissors, for example if we look at the T. The phrase CUT IT, i think completely works with this idea. It is direct and simple. However i may change around where i will put that title.
The curve of the page gives the poster a flow of movement. It also makes it obvious that it is an actual page that is in process of being cut.
The dashed line still remains from the previous ideas. I think it is a great and simple way to portray the idea of the scissors cutting.

What Font to use???

It had come to the point where i needed to pick what font to use for the word CUT. There are a few fonts i had researched however i feel none of these entirely work.

Experimenting with different materials.

On this page i was experimenting with different materials. Working with the word " CUT" i tried writing this on different materials such as ; fabric, paper and toilette paper. The reason why i tried using toilette paper is to see whether it would be better looking or have a different effect.. However i can see there is nothing interesting about this concept. So i have decided to just stick with paper because it is more firm but flowy at the same time.

CUT

After my assesments. It came to the conclusion for me that instead of writtind own scissors in a dashed line i should just keep simple a use the word " cut". This word is simple and more direct.
On this page i was working around the idea of having half the scissors covered by a page to be my final. I think with the bottom or top part of the blade of the scissors would be interesting as a display and would give it more of a movement.

Here is another sheet of me trying to experiment where to put the word CUT.
I think the main image in this sheet will be my final because i like how the sheet is flowy and yet still at the same time. I like how the scissors is displayed as well

Touch up.

As said in the previous post, i decided to work more on the photos i had taken of the scissors. So what i did was touch them up. These were the few finals i had from the many i had worked on.  The long image in the center i believe i has alot of potential. Even though it is too dark to see ( again the printer) i feel that a bit more work with this, it could come across to be my final.

Designing the poster

On these sheet area 6 mini ideas of how the poster may be displayed. This was needed for assesments to show that we had a few final ideas . I think that even though there are many ideas here, i feel that working with one of the photos may be best.

Strap Lines

On this sheet all i had done here was list down a few straplines in order to put into my poster. On the right side were a few attempts of trying to see if a certain way written would make a difference. However i can now that it is not necessary, and with a normal font would do.

Photos of scissors

These are a few photos i had taken. Unfortunately they had printed out rather dark even though the original ones weren't at all. What i had done here was take photos of a very big scissors i had borrowed from the fashion section. The aim of this was try to get interesting angles and show the scissors in process of cutting.
I knew from these photos that i had a good idea going. All i needed to do here is work on this photo and experiment a few things.

Beginning to design

So i have finally started to think about how the composition of the poster should look like. On this page i was looking at how the scissors can be positioned in the actual poster. I very much like the idea to the left more than the other two. I think by rotating the scissors facing downward gives it a good effect to the poster as a whole. I agree to the whole idea of the dashed lines pilling at the bottom and then continues across the border of the page. I know for sure in my final poster the handle of the scissors will remain black that is why i painted the handles black. If it were in colour, it may be a distraction :D

More Different Ideas.

The main idea of this sheet is to have the scissors cut out the actual word scissors that is displayed in dashed lines.
I think the top left corner image has a lot of potential.   I very much like the composition because it has an appealing look to it. It is also very poster like looking.

On this sheet here, i was focusing how i could add the phrase " Celebration of everyday objects". I looked at the fonts MV Boli and Saege Script.  I think that with the two images may be too crammed together.

Experimenting with dashed lines.

I decided to then look at how i could start using the dashed lines in different ways. As seen in the image to the right, you can see that i spelt out the word scissors on an actual material. I wanted to see whether writing on this material would be more exciting rather than paper.

As you can see here, i was still trying to experiment with the dashed lines and see how i could combine it with the image of a scissors. I tried a few things such as taking away the top part of the scissors and replaced it with dashed lines.

It was however important that the dashed lines scissors word would not take over the attention of the actual scissors.

Looking at the scissors itself.

After stepping back a bit in this project, i decided to then focus on just the scissors itself and how it can be displayed in different angles. I  then thought of the dashed lines that is normally shown.
So with these two images i drew scissors with and without the hand and from different perspective.

On this page i was then trying to add the idea of the scissors cutting the page. So here are a few images where the page is being cut and it turned. After drawing this i felt this had a lot of potential. It focuses on the actual scissors and nothing else.

Looking in deeper.

This page has a deeper insight of how scissors can be used.  Apart from the two images at the bottom of this page of the hair being cut, the other 3 however are more interesting. The image with the scissors cutting the ribbon saying cut spending has a double meaning. Not only is it physically cutting the ribbon it is also telling us to cut spending, so the word "cut" is used in two ways. As much as at the time i thought it was a good idea, i understand that this may not be "celebrating" the object scissors. The other image of the scissors cutting the heart, came from the phrase " you have cut my heart" as in you have broken the heart. Again this does not celebrate the idea of scissors. The last one of the scissors cutting the line between North Korea and South Korea, i found was interesting to work with. I wanted to show the idea that between these two countries they are cut off from each other, no connection at all.

On these two other sheets I had thought of connecting animal heads to the actual scissors. I first started off with the head of a crocodile. It was important to think of an animal head that can cut things. So i then looked at birds beaks mainly because it similar to the shape of the razor part of the scissors and a shark. I began to then think that maybe this idea has more potential, so what i did was look at more animal heads as seen below.

After looking at all these animal heads, i began to think that this idea depended too much on the actual animal head instead of the scissors. So i stepped back and looked at a different section.

And so the thumbnails begin.

So instead of listing all these ideas, it come to the point that it was very necessary for me to actually draw them out.  All of these images in these two pages are all the things scissors can cut.

List of ideas

From all these research, i felt i was still stuck, I didnt know how to move on from this point. So i decided to make another mind map in oder to help me look at a different way. In this minda map i focused on the different expressions that is given when we mention scissors to others. I then looked at  what the scissors are used for, the different sizes, its visual effects and the sound when cutting. There were only 3 that i had come up with. " snip snip", " click click" , "tchick tchick". I then realized that sound wasnt important in this project.

On this sheet, i was listing out the things scissors can cut. I came across a few good ideas. But when discussing this to my tutors, i was told i was looking at this the wrong way. The purpose of this project is to try to celebrate the idea of scissors in the world.

Looking at different types of scisorrs...

I was very much amazed when looking up on the internet the different types of scissors there were in the world. I thought it was interesting how certain scissors were designed in a different ways mainly to give it more force when cutting, such at the scissors for cutting flowers. The blade is much larger than the other types of scissors. The reason for this is so that the stem of the flower can be cut smoothly and with no effort for our hands. I was also interested in the scissors that is used for the hospital. This one is placed in the center of the page, the one with the long tip. This form of scissors however is not for cutting, instead it is for catching things, such a a bullet in a surgery. However more, even though my interest in all these other sorts of scissors, i knew i was wondering off in a path that was not necessary. I needed to focus on the regular scissors that cuts things and nothing else.

New Project. SCISSORS!

So after finishing with the mortgage project. We were then assigned to do another project. This one however was different. We were supposed to design a project out of the object we were assigned to. So after pulling out the strip of paper out of the basket it said " scissors".
Similar to the other project we were sent off to look at the history of this object, and make mind maps.
These are the sheets i had started with, when i was first assigned to this project.

My first sheet made was make a mind map of all the things we know that scissors can cut. So as seen in the image i had put down; wire, hair, plastic, food, cardboard, aluminium, paper, cloth, robe/ clothes etc.
On this sheet of paper i had looked at the history of the scissors. It was first invented in Egypt around 1500 BC. The first earliest known scissors appeared in Mesopotamia, 3,000 / 4,000 years ago.
William Whiteley& Sons was the first manufacturer of scissors in the year 1760.
On this sheet, was looking at the Design, Function, Aesthetic of the scissors. Also in the corner on the left are all the materials that we know can be cut by scissors.

My final model!

So at last i had finished my mortgage. I was surprised that it was able to stand up and the plaster did not break. And the bricks turned out really well. I had stuck the carboard bricks to the wood with super glue, it worked very well.
